Neurosurgery Step Down Unit
April 22, 2009

Call it a home away from home. You are looking at Cape Coral Hospital’s Neurosurgery Step Down Unit designed to give patients the creature comforts of home.

Wendy Piasick is the Vice President of Patient Care Services, “its state of the art. It is a beautiful, restful place for patients to go after they’ve had surgery and their families can stay with them.” Patients on the fourth floor are recovering from spine and back-related surgeries, procedures that can be delicate and can often be very uncomfortable for the patient. “The rooms are configured in a way that patients can get up and not have to travel too far to get to the bathroom or to get to their cupboards and its just designed to be like a bedroom at home, as close you can get it to be here,” adds Piasick.

There are some things people can do overall to avoid back pain in the first place. “Whenever people lift or do anything, they usually round their spine. You want to keep your back straight, bend your knees, and make sure you are lifting straight up and not turning when you are lifting,” explains Heather Brown, an exercise specialist at the Cape Coral Wellness Center.

"Physical therapy is involved and a lot of initiation is done right up front so that the patient doesn’t languish in bed and they can get up and move around and go back to their normal environment," says Piasick. Knowing the proper way to lift heavy items and protect your back can help avoid any sort of injuries.

The nurses in the 10-bed facility also work closely with the family during the recovery process.
