Reverend's Recovery
April 25, 2008 |
Reverend Cynthia Brahser’s life was transformed in an instant. The Lee Memorial
Health System Chaplin was on an afternoon drive when her truck was slammed from
the side. EMS workers used the Jaws of Life to get Cynthia out of the car.
Within minutes she was air lifted to the Lee Memorial Trauma Center. Dr. Nelayda
Fonte who works with Trauma and Surgical Critical Care says Brasher had “so many
multiple injuries including internal injuries.” Brasher remembers having a
number of broken ribs on my left side from the initial impact. She said her
physicians were concerned about a possible fracture in her pelvis. After some
observation, physicians found that Cynthia had a tear in her diaphragm. Dr. Drew
Mikulaschek helped to treat Brasher’s serious injury. “I saw her one day and I
didn’t think things looked quite right so I ordered a repeat study and it was
like 3 or 4 days into her hospital stay that’s when we found the injury and 90
minutes later she was in the operating room.” Brasher says, “That was found only
because physicians remained persistent and suspicious that there was something
else going on. I give credit to the trauma team for my life.” Now she is walking
and back to work at the job she loves. Her remaining scars from the accident
continue to heal. She says, “My husband reminds me that those scars are signs of
life.” The Chaplin often meets with the surgeons who saved her life. She feels
it’s important that she thank each one of them personally. |
