Arthritis and Heart Disease
April 26, 2009 |
It’s a dangerous equation: heart disease plus arthritis and the Centers for Disease
Control fear that could equal inactivity, which in turn could bring fatal results.
“If you have severe or disabling arthritis and you aren’t able to be very active
it is going to impact your overall health, including diabetes and heart disease,”
explains Dr. Juan Bustillo, a rheumatologist with Lee Memorial Health System.
Doctors stress that neglecting the body could make the problem worse. ”We encourage
physical therapy, occupational therapy, we encourage water exercises for example,
aerobics is very important. The more physical you can stay, the better that you
can maintain your weight, the better its going to be for your health overall,” adds Dr. Bustillo.
You should consult your doctor for the best exercise plan to tailor to your needs.
The study also
found that people who had both arthritis and diabetes admitted they
didn’t know which exercise would be safe for their bodies, which is why it’s important to speak with your doctor.
