Medical Libraries
April 28, 2008 |
If you think a medical library is just a resource for physicians and nurses
think again. There are four medical libraries in Lee County that are focused on
and open to the public. Narges Ahmadi is the Medical Library Director for Lee
Memorial Health System. She says, “Many patients come to us after they visit the
doctor after they have the diagnosis because you know the doctor doesn’t always
have all the time you might need to answer the questions and sometimes at that
first moment you don’t even know the questions you might have later on. You come
to the library ready, you learn a little bit more and next time you go to the
doctor you know what to ask.” The shelves at the Cape Coral Hospital Medical
Library are jam-packed with books. Subjects cover everything from extensive
medical research to consumer health topics like cooking or medication
management. “People who are not yet diagnosed with anything but want to maintain
a good health come to find out about exercises or proper nutrition and healthy
lifestyles,” Narges says. Hundreds of medical books are also available in
lay-language which means the information and terminology is easier for patients
to understand. Nags says, “Usually it’s a surprise and a nice surprise usually
for the patients and for their families.” Medical libraries offer a variety of
books in Spanish and a large selection of novels and fictional materials.
Newsletters and medical journals are also available in hard copies and online.
Lee County’s medical libraries are usually open weekdays from 8:00 a.m. to 4:30
p.m. with limited hours on Saturdays. |
