New Children's Hospital Ambulance
April 28, 2009 |
Meet the newest addition to The Children’s Hospital of Southwest Florida.
This brightly colored teal and yellow ambulance certainly looks much different than
the older ones and for a reason. “When you saw it coming down the road, I didn’t
want there to be any doubt that this was not an EMS truck, that this was something
very special and different,” explains Michelle Waddell, Director of Neonatal Services.
She helped design this 2008 model. “We wanted the inside to be warm, and friendly,
and I really thought about the team.”
The new vehicle comes complete with touch screen climate controls, specially designed
seats, internal cameras and easy access to all equipment. Since the ambulance will
serve as a transportation vehicle between hospitals and around the state, safety
and comfort were both extremely important. “Some of our transports can be very long,
especially
when traveling to the Tampa or Miami area. I wanted the inside to be
pleasant,” adds Waddell.
There’s also added room in the cab area. “We did the four-door cab for two reasons,
so that we can take a family member, we can take one, but also, if there’s no patient
in the back, we wanted the team to ride up front.”
This new state of the art ambulance was delivered just this month, thanks to some
generous donations. “One hundred percent. The Naples Children Education Foundation
provided a good portion of the money and the Sanibel Captiva Cares Foundation provided
the other half of the money. Their generosity allowed us to have the best of everything.”
Around 150 babies and young children are transferred to the Children’s Hospital of Southwest Florida from other hospitals around the state each year. The hospital
has been recognized nationally for its excellent care and is the only comprehensive
pediatric hospital between Tampa and Miami. |
