Fast Track ER
April 29, 2009

The construction workers are hard at work. Phase 1 of Cape Coral Hospital’s expanded Emergency Room is starting to take shape, and with the new look comes a new system.

“Based on their acuity, they are going to walk through the door, they’re going to be triaged, and based on their acuity, they are going to go the fast track area or they’ll be placed in the main emergency department,” says Dr. Timothy Dougherty, the medical staff president for the hospital.

Steel beams line the ceiling and some electrical panels are in place. Over in this section, there are several metal divides. When completed, it will serve as rooms for the new fast track system. “If they’re in the fast track area, they’re going to have their own little waiting room and we have protocols in place that will do x-rays, blood tests, whatever needs to be done, and we’ll be able to see patients more efficiently,” explains Dr. Dougherty.

Cape Coral Hospital’s emergency room is the busiest ER in Lee County. Architects and hospital personnel hope this new system will make emergency care easier and more comfortable for patients.

The entire expansion project is divided into five phases. Phase 1 should be completed by the end of the summer.
