Wound Care Basics
May 8, 2007

An understanding of minor wound care is essential for families. Unfortunately too many myths about it are accepted as facts. Is it fact or fiction that salt water is good for that cut?

Dr. John Bishop tells us not to go to the beach any time soon for wound care, that's just a myth. "There are organisms that are in the ocean that if they sneak up housekeeping in your leg it could take months and months to get well, it's devastating,"

It is a fact however that you should always be prepared ahead of time with supplies in your home and car in case someone in your family gets wounded. Parent Lori Jennings says, "It was so awful, the one time she cut herself and we're running around the house like crazy looking for our band aids and stuff."

But making sure you know what supplies to use on that cut can really make a difference on how it heals. Dr. Bishop clarifies that peroxide has no place in wound care whatsoever. "So that's an old wives tale. It's something we gave up on 20 years ago and it has no place in wound care at all."

Hydrogen peroxide actually interferes with healing and can irritate the wound. So what should be used? Dr. Bishop advises "good old-fashioned soap and water."

So clean it properly and cover the wound to speed up the healing process and minimizes the chance of infection. It's also a fact that all wounds should be treated with antiseptic cleanser or antibiotic ointment.
