Nurse Moffitt
May 10, 2009 |
It’s just after 7am on a Monday morning and nurse Marsha Moffitt is just finishing
up a 12 hour shift in the Intensive Care Unit at Lee Memorial Hospital. “I’d much
rather take care of the patients than do the paperwork.”
This coming October, Marshall will celebrate 30 years with Lee Memorial Health System.
“My mother was a nurse and one of my girlfriends in high school was going to nursing
school, so I decided to go too,” says Moffitt.
Marsha lives in Port Charlotte and travels a long distance to work, but says it’s
the personal rewards that keep her going. “Seeing patients that do get well. Especially
intensive care, they come in so sick and then to see them get better, especially
when they come back to visit.”
Marsha also works with young nurses on the floor to help them get settled into the
profession and admits times have changed. “When I first got out of school, all I
did was go around with a cart and give out pills. It’s a lot different now, with
all the technology, the monitors, the computers, the chart, we used to write on
paper.”
Lee Memorial Health System is currently looking for more nurses. Marsha is quick
to add the traditional role of nursing has changed and with it, comes new opportunities.
“Clinics, nurse anesthesia, nurse practitioners. My husband goes to the doctor once
a week and he doesn’t even see a doctor, he sees a nurse practitioner,” adds Moffitt.
