SILS Procedure
May 13, 2009

Having that gallbladder removed is now as easy as 1-2-3 thanks to new state of the art technology.

“The procedure involves making a single incision in the belly button and inserting 2 or 3 laparoscopic instruments to go in and manipulate the gallbladder, identify important structures and ultimately remove the gallbladder” explains Lee Memorial Health System laparoscopic surgeon, Dr. Darren Miter. It’s called “SILS”, Single Incision Laparoscopic Surgery. Dr. Miter is the first physician in Southwest Florida to perform this cutting edge procedure.

“Just about any patient who needs their gallbladder removed is a candidate for this single incision approach,” adds Dr. Miter.

Traditional techniques involve three or four incisions. The SILS procedure requires just one and with it, fewer potential problems. “By making a single incision, the scar is almost completely invisible, there’s only one incision for discomfort and one incision for a post-operative wound infection,” says Dr. Miter. Recovery time is quicker and easier. “They’re up and walking around faster, back to work faster, not having to worry about incisions.”
