Pat's Cardiac Rehab
May
16, 2008 |
After an eight hour heart surgery and eight days in the intensive care unit,
patient Patricia Gerber faced the task of standing on her own two feet. “I felt
fine until I went to stand up of course. The doctors really didn’t give me a
choice he said you will go into the Cardiac Rehabilitation Program,” says
Patricia. At first cardiac rehabilitation seemed like a scary proposition for
Patricia. She says, “When I went into the Cardiac Rehab of course I was scared
because I saw this plethora of huge machines and treadmills and bicycles.” In
the beginning she was barely able to walk but a few weeks into the program
Patricia was showing tremendous signs of improvement. She credits the staff of
the Cardiac Rehabilitation Program at HealthPark Medical Center for helping her
get healthy again. “They train by example. They motivate you by singing and
dancing and keeping it going even when the exercise is very difficult. It just
makes it fun to complete the whole 36 sessions so it was just a life changing
and life saving experience to go there and I enjoy every minute of it.” At the
beginning of her program Patricia could barely walk slowly on a treadmill for
one minute. Now this sassy senior is able to run two and a half miles per hour,
uphill for a solid five minutes. |
