Sesame Allergies
May 18, 2009 |
They’re the common culprits: fish, eggs, milk- but in the past 10 years, doctors
are seeing more cases of sesame allergies.
Lee Memorial Health System allergy and immunology specialist, Dr. Charles Turnier
says, “there’s a probably a combination of factors. We know allergies in general
are higher than it was. Almost have double the cases since 1997.”
While researchers are trying to figure out why, Dr. Turnier believes its because sesame is showing up in products other than food. “You find sesame in different
cosmetics people are using. So, that makes more and more exposure, and of course,
people are having more allergies to it,” explains Dr. Turnier.
Vomiting, diarrhea, rashes, and nausea can be signs of a food allergy. Getting to
the root of the problem is easy. ”You can do an allergy skin test at the office,
and you know, usually within 15 minutes of the test, who has this allergy or that
one,” says Dr. Turnier.
In some cases, blood tests are also performed to find out
what exactly is triggering
your reaction.
