Sleep Filled Nights
May 20, 2009 |
It is lights out, but that doesn’t mean everyone is sleeping. “Frequently,
if a child doesn’t sleep through the night, they wake the parent up. Then, the parent
doesn’t sleep through the night,” explains The Children's Hospital pediatric sleep
specialist, Dr. Jose Colon.
Some kids can leave tell-tale signs of a restless night without parents even knowing
it. “You may pass through the room and you’ll see a lot of restlessness within the
bed, the covers all over the place the next morning,” explains Dr. Colon.
He believes a nighttime routine may be just what the family needs. “We put our pajamas
on at the same time. We brush our teeth at the same time. We have a designated time
when we take our LAST drink of water. That way the child doesn’t continue to come up and ask for a water, ask for a cookie, ask for something different,” advises
Dr. Colon. He also suggests keeping the bedroom as dark as possible to encourage
slumber.
Doctors also suggest the family waking up and going to bed at the same time every
night to ensure optimal sleep.
