Project Hope
May 22, 2008

For the past several years the owners and customers of the store Quilt lovers Hangout have hand stitched quilts for breast cancer survivors. But this year they wanted to sew up something different. Debbie Olive is a co-owner of the quilting shop. She says, “I wanted something that could be more than just the month of September and October because cancer, any type of cancer is not just a one or two month disease it’s all the time.” With support from the local affiliate of Susan G Komen for the Cure, quilters are now sewing up useful tote bags. It’s part of a program called Project Hope. Rosalie Seigel works with Susan G. Komen for the Cure of Southwest Florida. She says, “The bags are given out upon diagnosis and it’s a hope it’s all about giving them hope and letting them know that there’s somebody there who cares about them.” The hand-made bags will also be filled with information and tools to help the cancer patients cope with their treatment. Rosalie says, “We’ve included everything from herbal teas so they can just sit and relax and read through some of the information and put journals in there so they can document their questions.” Seven different agencies will hand out the bags to women in Lee and Collier counties. The quilters are already surprised at the success of Project Hope. Debbie says, “Our goal was 300 for the year and we’ve already reached that goal and we hope that it will continue on until we find a cure for this.” If you want to learn more about how you can get sewing with Project Hope call (239)-995-0045. Anyone can stop by Quilt lovers Hangout in North Fort Myers and pick up a free sewing kit to create a bag for project hope.
