Eating Healthy When at Work
Air Date:  May 31, 2006

Many Americans are so busy at work they even resort to eating at their desk and this isn't such a healthy idea. So what are the hungry and overworked to do?

According to the American Dietetic Association 70% of us are eating at our desks at work several times a week. This, often times, is leading to poor nutritional food choices. Take for instance all of those vending food prepackaged trans fat snacks.

Registered Dietitian Jeanne Struve says "They raise LDL levels, your bad cholesterol and they actually decrease the HDL levels, which is your good cholesterol which actually makes you at more risk for heart disease."

One of the biggest drawbacks to eating while you're at work is that you're simply not focusing on your food. Instead you're answering phone calls, sending emails, the result is you're eating way too much. Busy Accountant Audrey Nieson says that "I think that's really true, especially in a busy work environment. And I don't realize how much I'm actually eating all day. Especially when you have a lot of snacks at your desk."

So it's important to pay attention to what you're eating and how much. If you must eat while you work, bring your lunch. Audrey has learned that preparing ahead of time helps her make healthier choices. "It makes a big difference, especially with portion control and keep better track of how many calories you're actually eating throughout the day."

But if you must eat at your desk--be sure to disinfect your workspace. In terms of bacteria your desk could be 400 times dirtier than your toilet. Now, that's appetizing.

Another thing you may need to watch out for at work is your soda consumption. Regular sodas contain a lot of sugar, which can cause you to gain weight.
