Injury-Proof Home Checklist
June 1, 2009

Summer is fast approaching and with more kids at home and outdoors, the risk of injuries increases. The CDC reports more kids visit the emergency room in the summer than any other time of year because of unintentional injuries.

Liz Moreno is a Child Advocate at the Children’s Hospital of Southwest Florida. She has an injury-prevention checklist for parents.

The first: keep hazardous chemicals out of sight. “Detergents, medicine, liquor, we want to keep them out of reach of children and safely locked,” explains Moreno.

Second on the list, make sure your kids are wearing helmets. If your child like to scooter or bike around the neighborhood, a helmet, worn properly, is important.  “For the most part, most kids don’t want to mess up their hair so we wear it tilted up, that’s not the proper way. It’s not going to protect anything. We want to make sure its right at the level here and it’s protecting the brain,” adds Moreno.

Finally, have an emergency plan. Program all emergency numbers into all cell phones and keep emergency numbers near phones installed in the home. “Definitely poison control and your 9-1-1. Make those your priority,” says Moreno.

This checklist could also potentially save the family some money. A typical visit to the emergency room for a child related injury can cost between $400 and $500.
