Reducing Stress
Air Date:  June 11, 2006

Stress seems to have become a constant factor in today's fast-paced society. If left unchecked, it can wreak havoc upon our health.

Music - the universal language. Whether you play an instrument or simply listen to one, music brings people together during sorrow, celebration and.even during stressful times. Cardiologist David Bailey explains, "You have to look at stress reduction and some things will work for others and we're all different. Some people find music or joining a group."

Whether it's a flute, violin or piano, music can bring back happy memories-- while simultaneously and unknowingly -- divert one's attention from stressful thoughts as Vera Nessen learned after losing her husband. "After he died I thought, I didn't know what I was going to do. I play now sometimes most everyday."

Vera believes that in times of stress, people can turn to harmful habits like cigarette smoking and alcohol. These coping methods only put you at additional risk for heart disease and stroke. Try turning to something positive instead. "Singing is good for you, you know."

Dr. Bailey says that when pleasurable music plays, certain parts of the brain are triggered to wake up the so-called "happy chemicals" which can result in lowering one's level of stress. "Well, I think there are some people without any question feel benefit from having relaxation modes of some form, be it pets or music."

Music can even temporarily lower one's blood pressure. So maybe a little "whistle while you work" can lower your stress, making your day just a little easier-at any age.

The use of music for therapeutic value has been documented throughout history. But that's just one stress reduction suggestion, if you're extremely stressed out talk to your physician for guidance-your health may depend on it.
