Summertime Safety

June 11, 2007

Now that summer is in full swing where there's fun for kids, there's often safety concerns for parents. School is done and summer has come. But it's never too early to teach your kids basic safety habits. "You got to make sure at an early age you start to give them lessons. Make sure that they wear life jackets when they go out on boats. Make sure that they are not alone when they are around a pool and that there's protection, those fences around pools," says Pediatrician Emilio Del Valle.

We can't forget that in our area, the summer season also brings rain-and what does rain bring? Dr. Del Valle says, "When the rain season comes here in Florida and we had a lot of mosquitoes, they can transmit encephalitis, they can also transmit other diseases so it's very important as far as the summer safety that insect repellent be taken into consideration."

Other fun activities for kids over the summer are riding ATVs, scooters and horses- so staying safe also means wearing a helmet. Studies show wearing helmets can reduce the risk of head injury by 85%. Jennifer Womble, who is a mother of three, says, "Every time they're on the bicycle and their scooter we trained them very early to always wear their helmets. And now they don't even think twice about wearing their helmets."

Summer is supposed to be about fun in the sun, but while you're doing it be sure that you keep your children well covered in sunscreen and don't forget about fun.

Children who start playing sports later in the summer, such as football, soccer and cross-country, may be at risk of developing dehydration and heat-related illnesses.
