Just when you thought it was over, there is it.
A spot that can conjure up memories
of those teen years.
“A lot of people even though they pass that puberty phase where acne is pretty common,
as an adult sometimes it comes back,” explains family practice physician, Dr. Avery
Wright of Lee Memorial Health System.
So, what causes these troublesome blemishes to return during adulthood? Dr. Wright
says it’s most likely hormonal changes. “Its not really hygiene related. People
think, ‘aw, your face is dirty’ or something like that, it’s more an internal issue.”
Recent estimates find that nearly 30% of adult women and 20% of adult men deal with
these problem spots everyday. The treatments available are endless. “A lot of simple
acne preparations such as benzoyl peroxide washes are a good idea. You just have
to find the right thing
because everybody’s skin is different,” adds Dr. Wright.
Finding the right one can get expensive. Dr. Wright believes a more cost-effective
way to erase your acne is with a trip to the doctor’s office. “They can give you
a good idea of where to go: whether its prescription or over the counter.”
Don’t underestimate the power of a healthy lifestyle. Dr. Wright says exercise,
healthy eating, and staying hydrated can also help keep your pores clear.
