1.5 million heart attacks occur in the United States. Some heart attacks are sudden and intense, but most start slowly, with mild pain or discomfort. Physician Carlos Cuello explains, "Butterflies in the chest, dizzy spells, all of a sudden they feel like their feet are not there, or headache."
Dr. Cuello says that a lot of people aren't sure what's happening ---don't think that they are at risk and wait too long to get help. You need to realize that you could be having a heart attack -don't brush it off as something less significant. "Most heart attacks are symptomatic, that means the patient feels chest pain but many are without symptoms and those also lead to heart disease, to weakening of the heart."
Adults of all ages need to be concerned about their health. Travis Miller is only 21 years old and he was shocked to find out that he had high blood pressure -which is a risk for a heart attack. "I assumed that I was pretty much just stressed out. I really didn't feel like I was that unhealthy. I felt pretty fit. I quit smoking immediately as soon as I found out."
Dr. Cuello also says that "The #1 preventable risk factor is smoking. All of those contribute to plugging up of the arteries of the heart, coronary artery disease and heart attacks."
If you think you've experiencing the symptoms of a heart attack, what's important to remember is to dial 911 immediately.
After calling 911, research indicates that chewing one regular strength adult aspirin will be beneficial. It inhibits blood clotting in the affecting coronary artery.
