Finding the Perfect Babysitter
June 15, 2009 |
The summer job market is a tough one for teens. Some are having to compete
with adults for open positions which leaves them looking at alternative ways to
bring in money. Some turn to babysitting.
“You want to look for people that are responsible, that are there on time, who are
ready for you to pick them up on time, people have also have very good notes about what happened that day or night when they babysat, “explains Child Life Specialist,
Kelley Cowan of The Children's Hospital of Southwest Florida.
In order to find the right one for your family, Cowan advises parents to look for
potential sitters in churches or in the workplace. Then, schedule an interview.
“Have them come over, interview them personally, and let their children play with
them. And see how well they do and maybe walk away from the situation.” Parents,
especially, should ask questions. “Ask for references, how long have they been babysitting,
and what types of age groups have they been sitting for in the past, “explains Cowan.
Cowan teaches Safe Sitter classes at HealthPark. Classes designed to prepare a sitter
for anything and everything. “We start off with actually babysitting as a business,
how to be professional in a workplace,” adds Cowan. Kids between ages 11 to 18 also
learn first aid, CPR, the Heimlich maneuver, and other emergency preparedness. “What
happens if the power goes out? What happens if something like a burglar breaks in?”
Students who attend the Safe Sitter classes also learn behavior management skills.
Classes are held two Saturdays each month. You can call 239-432-4122 for more information.
