Mediterranean Diet

June 22, 2007

According to the American Heart Association those who have suffered a heart attack are at a much greater risk for a repeat. New studies suggest a Mediterranean-style diet is just as good as the classic low-fat diet for heart attack sufferers wanting to avoid a repeat.

Dietician Jeanne Struve explains that the Mediterranean style diet is a little higher in fat but it focus on the good fat like olive oil and avocados rather than saturated fat like butter or trans fat like margarine.

Doctors say this study was one of the best particularly on the heart health because participants stuck to it and achieved the goals for reduced fat intake. "It can make someone feel more satisfied because they don't feel like they are on a real restricted diet," say Jeanne.

David Bailey, a Cardiologist, suggests "It's what we call risk factor modification, yes there's a certain amount of things we give you for your heart that you swallow, but there are other areas you have to address for yourself with time." Dr. Bailey is referring to patients taking the initiative for their own diet; and being aware of cholesterol and saturated fat levels they take in.
