Heat and Migraines
June 28, 2009 |
Do you feel a migraine coming on? You could blame the rising temperatures.
‘If there’s a temperature change, that can actually affect the severity of your
migraines,” says Dr. Aldith Lewis, an internal medicine specialist with Lee Physician
Group. The association between migraines and the heat was never really concrete
until now. ”There are some researchers at the Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center
in Boston that actually found that an increase in 9 degrees in temperature increases
headache risks by 8%,” says Dr. Lewis.
She has a few prevention tactics. The first, watch what you eat, especially in the
summertime. “Certain foods can cause migraines like chocolates, nuts, aged cheese,
beer, alcohol,” she says. Stay hydrated. “Drinking plenty of water actually helps
prevent migraines. Also, exercising regularly and going to sleep at the same time
and waking at the same time,” suggests Dr. Lewis.
If you do feel a headache coming on, treat it early, with over the counter medication
like Tylenol or Motrin. But if you are experiencing migraines multiple times throughout
the week, see your doctor.
