Frequent Blood Donor Need
July 1, 2008

Every three seconds someone in the United States needs blood. Right now there’s no substitute for human blood and the only way to acquire it is through donations.

Nancy Hendrick is the Community Relations Coordinator with Lee Memorial Blood Centers. She says, “Hopefully a lot of people come out and understand the importance is there and it’s always there and if it’s not there on the shelf you may never need it again.”

At only 17 years old Katie Washington already knows the importance of donating her much needed blood. She says, “I started donating blood when I was sixteen because I just like to help out people.” And Katie likes to help people every chance she gets. “It’s a good cause, you should come help every chance you get - every eight weeks so it’s no harm and it helps a lot of people.”

Nancy says its frequent blood donors like Katie who can make a real difference when it comes to the regular availability of blood. “What we hope to accomplish is to get more first time donors, more frequent donors, more participation, just to make sure that the inventory level is high enough to make sure we had an adequate and safe supply.”

Lee Memorial Blood Services will host three fun in the sun blood drives next month. For more information on when and where you can donate log onto www.LeeMemorial.org.

In the United States one out of every ten people entering a hospital will be in need of donated blood.
