Alcohol and Breast Cancer
July 3, 2009

A toast to health and happiness. Could sipping this glass of wine actually be hazardous to your health?

“One drink or an ounce of alcohol per day is probably not going to hurt you,” says Dr. Eric Goldsmith, an oncology surgeon with Lee Memorial Health System.

The studies aren’t exactly clear. The most recent suggests alcohol may account for nearly 13% of cancers, including breast cancer. But how much is safe to drink seems to be the controversial issue. “Once you start getting to that 2 ounces or more everyday, it does seem to have some relationship,” adds Dr. Goldsmith.

Some scientists suggest alcohol increases estrogen which in turn increases the risk of breast cancer. Dr. Goldsmith has his own theory “ I don’t know if you need to drink an ounce a day, but certainly if you have a drink or two on the weekend, that’s probably not going to make any difference.” So, if you feel the need to raise that glass and make a toast, Dr. Goldsmith says do so, in moderation.
