Playground Safety
July 7, 2009

During the summer months, it’s a busy place. “The playground is going to be a big hit this summer,” adds Liz Moreno, The Children's Hospital Child Advocate for Lee and Collier County’s Safe Kids. With money tight, many families are changing their summer plans.

Neighborhood playgrounds may be a lot busier this summer, and with it some potential problems. “A lot of unintentional injuries happen at the playground,” says Moreno. She says many of these injuries can be preventing, starting with adult supervision. ”Falling off the slide, the swing, falling is the main one,” explains Moreno. Examine the equipment on the playground. Is it suitable for your child’s age? The playground surface should be free of any debris or water that could cause your child to slip. Double-check to see that you have emergency numbers programmed in your cell phone in the event something should go wrong. “If your child stops breathing, is having a seizure, choking, call 9-1-1 immediately,” says Moreno. Pack plenty of water to make sure everyone stays hydrated and Moreno says there’s one more thing before you head out, “if you are going to be outdoors, apply sunscreen every two hours.”

Some simple suggestions that should make that day at the playground fun and safe for everyone.
