Top Female Health Risks

, 2009

A recent study finds more women are putting off seeing the doctor these days because of their hectic schedules, but now may not be the time to let your guard down.

Researchers have unveiled the top 5 biggest health risks facing women.

Number 1: heart disease. “That’s huge in our country right now. And for years, it was a little under diagnosed in females, it was considered a male disease, females get it just as much,” warns Dr. Avery Wright, a family medicine physician with Lee Memorial Health System.

The second: cancer. “The top cancers are lung cancer, then breast cancer, then colon cancer,” explains Dr. Wright.

Ranking third: stroke.

Followed by chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, otherwise known as COPD.

Rounding out the top 5 says Dr. Wright, “Alzheimer’s. Dementia. Its becoming more and more prevalent in women, we’re keeping an eye on that as well.”

She says that while not all diseases are preventable, having a yearly checkup is essential. This way, you and your doctor can stay up to date on health tests and detect any potential problems early.
