It may seem like playtime in the pool but there is lots of technique and training involved in the swimming classes offered at Cape Coral Wellness Center.

“We sing and everything for them but we’re pushing them all the time,” says Amparo “Chiqui” Zabala the aquatic programs director at the center. When it comes to pushing the limits in the pool, the retired professional swimmer says age shouldn’t stand in the way of becoming a skillful swimmer. “We have a program for everybody. Everybody can join in the swimming lessons. They can start when they are six months. I have students that are like 90 years old. If your baby doesn’t want to go under water well sorry for your baby he’s going to go under. We’re making them move their arms and their legs so we are challenging them all the time.”

Babies who start swimming with Chiqui at six months usually are able to move onto a higher skill level just a few years later. She says, “Once they are three years old I move them to the next level. If they feel comfortable in the water we start teaching them how to swim all the strokes, freestyle, backstroke, breaststroke and butterfly.”

If you want to get your kids in on the fun and keep them safe in the water you can call the Cape Coral Wellness Center at (239)-573-4507. Swimming lessons are offered several days a week all year long.
