Statin Study
July 12, 2009 |
It could be promising news in the fight against prostate cancer. A new study
out of Orlando finds drugs such as Lipitor and Crestor could be doing the trick.
“The link between statins in reduction of prostate cancer looks to be like its going
to be true,” says Dr. Barry Blitz, a urologist on the medical staff of Lee Memorial
Health System. Statins were originally designed to lower cholesterol, but this new
study found taking the pills could reduce a patient’s chances of dying from prostate
cancer by as much as 60%.
“Now that’s a pretty surprising finding, but the concern is whether the statins
are causing the actual prevention or if it helps the body treat cancer, there’s absolutely no understanding about why that’s true,” explains Dr. Blitz.
As for high power versus low power statins, that still remains up for debate. “The
stronger statins had a greater chance in improving people’s life expectancy than
the weaker statins. Again, you only want to take the medication that’s best for
you,” says Dr. Blitz.
That’s when a question and answer session with your doctor is in order.
