Veins

July 20, 2007

According to the American Heart Association, the veins in your arms and legs can be a good indicator of your heart health.

Vascular Surgeon Moutaa Benmaamer explains that the veins in our arms and legs become more visible as we get older but how do they affect our health? Pain caused by these veins being blocked can make your lifestyle miserable and limit your daily activities. “We think what's going on in the legs is only the tip of the iceberg. And we have to check the carotid and the heart.”

Dr. Benmaamer says that vein pain is easily treated but in many cases those veins become blocked and the lack of blood flow to the heart can cause serious problems, surprisingly high heels are also culprits. “The high heel because of the ankle, the foot doesn’t move the way that we want it. You don’t have what we call the muscle pump that will push the blood to go back to the heart.” Dr.

Benmaamer weighs in on other factors to watch out for when you’re vein pain becomes an issue. “Here in Florida people like to go in the Jacuzzi, Jacuzzis are not good things. Having fresh, cold shower to your legs is a very good thing.”

Doctors also suggest walking about twenty minutes a day to keep those veins healthy.

Abnormal inflammation of the legs is an indicator that you may need to go see a vein specialist.
