Men and Physician Visits
July 24, 2008 |
Men and regular health checkups; physicians say they often don’t go well
together. “A lot of men don’t go to the physician regularly and when they have
problems they wait a long time before they come to see a physician,” says Dr.
Salvatore Lacagnina the Medical Director of Lee Physician Group.
Since he stopped seeing many men come to visit him he decided to go visit the
men. He recently conducted a lecture on men’s health at The Wellness Center of
Cape Coral. “We felt that it would be a really good thing specifically to have a
men’s health lecture so that people would be aware of the things they should not
wait on and be aware of the diseases that generally affect men.” That includes
diabetes, prostate disease, cardiovascular disease and colon cancer.
But with regular screenings and physician visits men can prevent and detect the
problems before they become serious. If you can identify those chronic illnesses
and their risk factors for more chronic problems you can do them a world of good
you just have to get people on board with taking care of themselves.”
But even after men make it into the physician’s office many aren’t comfortable
brining up certain topics. But Dr. Lacagnina says the lecture atmosphere can
make some patients feel more secure. “Doing it specifically for men or women
separately is helpful because it gets rid of some of the tension I guess there’s
more camaraderie in the room and people will often express themselves a little
bit more.” |
