3 Commonly Missed Tests for Diabetics
Air Date:  July 28, 2006

The U.S. government reports that most adults with diabetes aren't getting three annual medical tests recommended for diabetic patients.

Registered Nurse Cheryl Svochak tells us that the first annual medical test that all diabetic patients should be getting is the hemoglobin ALC blood test. "It is an important tool in managing your diabetes that shows how well your diabetes has been controlled within the past two or three months."

Diabetic patient Rick Green says to "keep your diabetes in check you know."

Cheryl says that since diabetes is the leading cause of adult blindness in our country, the dilated eye exam is another important test that should be done every year to prevent blindness or eye damage. "Most ophthalmologist can do the dilated eye exam, ophthalmologist are medical doctors that are qualified to do the dilated eye exam and they can notice the changes in the back of your eye, blood vessels in the back of the eye get damaged from diabetes."

And then of coarse there's extra care diabetics need when it comes to their feet. If you're a diabetic you should be seeing your foot doctor every year. Rick tells us "In my case, I thought it was a regular blister and it just didn't heal. I had diabetic ulcer for roughly four years actually. Last time I went it was healed, we just need to maintain it."

Cheryl also says "Diabetics can lead a full normal life but it takes some work."

The more you know about diabetes, the better you'll be able to work with your health care team to avoid some of the risks associated with this disease. That's why it's really important to pay attention to the these test results.

There are other tests that diabetics need to get which include testing kidney function and blood pressure.

Remember these are the three most commonly missed tests so if you're a diabetic, be sure to check with your physician so you're exams are up to date.
