Digital Transition
July 28,
 2009

One patient. One record at a time. Hospitals around the country are making the transition: from paper to computerized medical records.

“The more we can make this all electronic in a single record, the better care everyone will have,” says Michael Smith, Chief Information Officer for Lee Memorial Health System.

Lee is leading the charge. It’s one of the only few health care systems in the country that’s almost finished with the digital conversion. A system, that could mean faster care for you the next time you visit any doctor’s office, hospital, or lab within the network.

“We use these electronic capabilities to allow physicians to see information and render care treatments from their office if the patients is in the hospital; to allow and OB physician to monitor a patient who’s in labor, from their office and come in if that patient happens to be in labor at the hospital,” adds Smith.

On your electronic file: previous doctor’s visits, prescriptions, lab results, even medication information. This way, every healthcare provider in the network is on the exact same page when it comes to dealing with your medical condition.
