Lessons Learned
July 30, 2008

Helping children learn the importance of water safety is one of the main goals of the Aqua Tots class at the Cape Coral Wellness Center.

Ida Harris knows how important lessons like these can be. After a family tragedy she now makes sure all of her grandkids learn how to swim. “Due to a drowning of an infant in our family we felt it very important that the children learn how to swim and to swim properly,” she says.

Chiqui Zabala thinks the best approach for introducing your child to the water is to have them jump right in and get used to it. “If your baby don’t want to go under water, well, sorry for your baby, he’s going to go under. If they feel comfortable in the water we start teaching them how to swim all the strokes - freestyle, backstroke, breaststroke and butterfly,” says the former professional swimmer. Between the ocean, canals, and pools, water surrounds most of us in Southwest Florida.

Ida urges others to learn from her tragic experience and find a way to enroll your children or grandchildren in swimming lessons. “It’s worth every cent the peace of mind is just terrific with it and I would recommend it to anyone.”

Swimming lessons are offered at the Wellness Center of Cape Coral year around. You can contact the center at (239)-573-47507. Remember that drowning is the leading cause of accidental death in Florida for children under four years old.
