Exercise Mistakes
July 30,
 2009

They’re the pitfalls that come with pumping iron. “Lifting too much weight, jerking motions, things like that,” says exercise specialist Heather Brown with the Cape Coral Wellness Center. If you are spending countless hours exercising and are not seeing results, you may want to take a second look at your technique.

“There’s a lot of common mistakes we make. One of the most common ones I tell people here is: don’t hold on when you are walking on the treadmill.” Using the handrails may actually hinder your progress. “That’s number one because when you are holding on to it, it actually makes it a lot easier, and you want it to be challenging, like normal walking outside, ” adds Brown.

Another pitfall: not lifting properly or wasting time. “And just not really doing enough in general. Some people will just come in and do a couple things and then just lollygag around. Usually, you have to break a little bit of sweat and push yourself,” says Brown. She works with people at the Cape Coral Wellness Center to help them find the best level of exercise for their needs.

So how can you tell if you’ve used your time wisely after that workout? “You should feel tired and out of breath a little bit, such as during the first 5 to 10 minutes of your cardio exercise,” says Brown.

A few checks and balances that could help you get the most out of your hard work.
