Teen Check-ups
August 3,
 2009

“In family medicine, we like to see the entire family, that’s obviously from babies to teenagers to adults,” says Family Physician, Dr. Mark McAllister with Lee Memorial Health System.

Checkups are especially important for babies as they grow and seniors as well, but in those teenage years, “it can be a forgotten time. Everybody is pretty good on immunizations and follow up and things like that which are very important, but when kids are healthy, which is good, after school starts, things start to be forgotten,” adds Dr. McAllister.

It can be a confusing time for teens transitioning into adulthood. A yearly checkup can help, both physically and emotionally. “It’s a good time to double check unfortunately with the increasing obesity, there’s higher rates of diabetes that are coming out and high blood pressure and high cholesterol,” explains Dr. McAllister

. He adds this can be a good time to establish a relationship with the doctor, too. This way, if a problem does arise, the teen will be comfortable scheduling a visit and discussing their concerns.
