Male Birth Control
August 6, 2007

Women have had the option of a safe and effective form of birth control since the sixties.

For the first time a safe and effective contraceptive for males may be available-but the question is whether or not men will take advantage of this option. Heath Hanson believes, “You know the old cliché, 'it takes two to tango'. If you're going to have any kind of relationship, a sexual relationship with somebody it's the responsibility of both people to take the necessary precautions.”

Heath says his main concern is whether or not the studies will prove the safety of this new concept for men even in the long term. “Just with like any other medication or medicinal treatment it has to go through clinical trials and tribulations and I would just want to make sure it went through the gauntlet and passed the rubric to make sure it was healthy.

Urologist Harry Tsai says that research on a male birth control pill began in Europe a few years ago. And now the United States has taken greater interest. However it could be around 5 years until the pill gets approved by the FDA.
“The FDA is so strict here in the US and in Europe it is usually more available.”

Dr. Tsai also says so until then-men still have some pretty limited options when it comes to preventing pregnancy.
“Right now there is only the Vasectomy for patients who want permanent birth control options or the standard ones that have been around for years.”

Researchers are still running tests on the male birth control drugs to find the right combination of hormones to achieve the most effective results.
