Weight Loss Surgery Misconceptions
August 7,
 2009

The reasons why are many.

For some, the decision to have bariatric surgery is sometimes the only option. "They've been on the soups, they've been on that diet, and they’ve been on that pill. And so basically, we would like that candidate to be the one that's truthfully tried everything," explains Lee Memorial Health System's bariatric surgeon, Dr. Moses Shieh.

He says there are some common misconceptions out there when it comes to weight-loss procedures.

The first: Bariatric surgery is the easy way out. “I would love to invite you to our support group and see that it is not the easy way out, because we are still emphasizing diet and exercise. But this tool is to help you get the proper diet and exercise," adds Dr. Shieh.

The second: “This is the final battle with weight.” "No. This is a tool, to get you to that point. Our goal is to get you back, getting you off those medications, maybe having a restful night's sleep, For the significant 300 to 400 pound individual, that's exhausted after walking down the street, now can walk with their child," adds Dr. Shieh.

The third: “You never have to diet or exercise again.” "We never say diet and exercise is over with. In fact, we're saying this tool, whatever tool you pick, and what we help you choose, is basically going to help you with the diet and exercise.
A better diet, a proper diet, and a more efficient exercise."

Dr. Shieh adds that losing weight is hard work, no matter how you decide to do it.
