Vein Laser
August 10, 2007

Blocked veins are more than just unsightly, they can cause a great deal of pain and even lead to some serious health conditions.

Vascular Surgeon Moutaa Benmaamer explains that healthy veins pump blood to the heart and lungs, but when a vein becomes blocked, enlarged or twisted that life-sustaining blood flow is cut off and it can cause a lot of problems. Removing the unhealthy veins can actually help save the healthy ones. “So we try to remove the bad ones to keep the good ones functioning. We will not run out of veins.”

Dr. Benmaamer says that a new laser surgery is offering patients a minimally invasive treatment option. “Now, we do what we call EVLT, Endovenous Laser Treatment. We treat the vein from inside. The beauty of this treatment, no need for general anesthesia.”

Dr. Benmaamer also says that traditional “open” surgery under sedation has been successfully used for decades, but the less-invasive E.V.L.T. approach is quite different and radically changes the day in a patient’s life. “The result is outstanding and the patient can walk and can drive himself home. So not even sedation, it's all local anesthesia. So we have the best result with very minimally invasive treatment. That's for the vein.”

Preventing vein problems can be as simple as walking 20 minutes a day and avoiding the regular use of jacuzzis.

Doctors also suggest that wearing high heels too often blocks the blood flow in the veins in your legs and can lead to problems down the road.
