Back to School Immunizations
August 10,
 2009

Backpack, pencils, new clothes . . . Immunizations?

“It is very important to stay up to date on immunizations,” says Dr. Shannon Greer, a family practice physician on the medical staff of Lee Memorial Health System.

Most schools require certain immunizations. In some cases, kids who are not up to date on their shots may not even be allowed to step inside the classroom until they’ve had them.

“You should always have a sheet of paper or your pediatrician or family physician will provide you with a sheet showing which immunizations you’ve had,” says Dr. Greer.

He realizes there may be some hesitation when it comes to immunizations, especially lately with controversy swirling around autism. But he seems to think they are safe and effective. “The immunization program has saved thousands, if not millions of lives. It has eradicated things like small pox. When was the last time you saw someone with polio? Measels? Mumps?” explains Dr. Greer.

You can schedule an appointment with your pediatrician or family physician to check on your child’s immunization status. A quick checkup may also be a good idea to make sure your child gets the school year started on the right foot.
