Some conditions of the skin can be caused by irritants like poison ivy, while others are linked to a malfunction of our immune system.
Taylor Kilgus was caught by surprise one morning as she looked in the mirror and saw something that wasn't there the night before. "There was a red dot on my face. I felt scared because I didn't know what it was."
Dermatologist, Aurora Badia says that Taylor was diagnosed with a condition called lupus. "Is an auto immune condition that can be just in the skin or it can also involve other organs of the body."
Dr. Badia also says that if lupus is limited to the skin, topical creams are used. "If it's more involved or involves more body areas of the joints and kidneys then oral treatments are used."
Taylor encourages others who are concerned about any changes to their skin to immediately see their doctor. "Don't worry because doctors can help you and to always wear sunscreen."
While lupus can affect anyone at any age, incidences of this disease are more common in women.
The cause of lupus is still unknown. This disease does tend to run in families.
