Water Safety
August 11,
 2009

It’s August. The warmer temperatures have parents and children flocking to water to find relief, but just how much does your family know about water safety?

“We definitely recommend that if you have children and a pool, you know CPR. We also recommend you have cell phone by the pool, if you need to call 9-1-1 right away,” says Michele King, Director of Child Advocacy for Lee Memorial Health System.

In the event something should happen to your child in the water, knowing life-saving tactics are essential. “Many of our children were saved because a family member or someone right there knew CPR,” adds King.

She also advises parents get their children accustomed to the water at a young age. “All children are different. Based on their development level, we advocate for swimming lessons and water safety, so in conjunction with swimming lessons, water safety should be taught at the same time.”

Lifesaving skills for both parents and kids that could avoid tragedy at the poolside.

The Wellness Center of Cape Coral offers children’s swim classes through the summer. For more information, call 573-4507.
