Lipo Dissolve
August 13, 2007

Plastic and cosmetic surgeries are topics of growing interest for people of all demographics.

Plastic Surgeon John Bruno explains that the most common plastic surgery performed today is known as liposuction-but experiments are underway on something called lipo dissolve, which actually dissolves the body’s fat. "Lipo dissolve is it relatively new in this country, it is basically using a technique where you inject a chemical beneath the skin into the fat that promotes the cells to rupture and your body absorbs the fat."

Dr. Bruno says that the procedure is still in the testing phase and doctors and researchers are waiting on more data to compare the pros and cons. "With this material if you happen to get too deep and you inject onto the muscle, you can actually cause damage. The medicine can also remove the fat from the motor nerves which are at the muscle level and you could short circuit the nerves to the muscle.”

Dr. Bruno also says that so there are some concerns and while liposuction has been the most popular method of removing large amounts of fat from the body why would someone want to switch to a new method? "Lipo dissolve is a very good alterative in very small areas or taking care of small problems because the surgery becomes a lot more involved for a small defect."

Dr. Bruno wants to make clear that neither liposuction or lipo dissolve should be used in the place of a healthy diet and exercise plan

According to the American Society of Plastic Surgeons, over half a million patients received liposuction over the past 2 years, which makes this procedure one of the top 2 cosmetic surgeries.
