Annual Physical
August 17, 2007

School is ready to be back in full swing, but whether you’re hitting the books or hitting the job.

Family physician Edward Drass tells us that annual checkups may sometimes seem repetitive-stepping on the scale, answering the same questions, but what’s most important is finding out if there is anything to be health conscience about. “What I try to do is give them a base line and information for them to work from, so they can improve their health not just manage diseases they have.”

Doctors like Dr. Drass are using a new approach to family medicine-they say that the patient’s exams are more of a time to establish health goals for the future. “The physical exam is the time when they get to ask me questions and I also get to see how they are doing with things we talked about before.

Dr. Drass says that means doing your homework before your checkup. with all the information floating around in the media you may feel bombarded and not know where to turn. “I try to go through those situations and clarify things in their mind so they are not confused and they get the proper information to apply to their health.

Every year family medicine brings out new technology, procedures and techniques-but what stays the same is the doctors willingness to provide more long term goals. Dr. Drass adds that, “its more than just managing disease it’s trying to prevent disease and promote healthy living.”

Doctors advise you not to underestimate your own concerns and questions-that’s because you need to be an active participant for the best possible health care.
