Efudex

The goal: to zap early signs of skin cancer. But new research finds some patients using Efudex are experiencing another beauty boost.

“It’s a secondary cosmetic benefit to a therapeutic treatment to precancerous skin lesions,” says plastic and reconstructive surgeon Dr. Drew Kreegel with the Lee Memorial Health System.

Efudex has been around for 40 years. But just recently University of Chicago researchers found that patients who used it twice a day on their face started to see their wrinkles fade away. Dr. Kreegel says he’s not surprised. “It actually does have a skin enhancing effect. Over the last 20 years, I have seen patients, one after the other, both tell me and I’ve observed, improvements in their skin.”

While this may be a cosmetic benefit, this cream should not be used in place of anti-wrinkling agents. “During the period of treatment, for 2-3 weeks, the areas of skin that are affected are usually inflamed and aggravated irritated, sometimes cracked.”

Efudex has a high success rate. It’s recommended you check your skin often for any strange spotting and share the information with your physician. The earlier you treat it, the better.
