Loss & Grief Support Group

The saying goes “time heals all wounds.” Now a special group of people is making
that time pass a little easier when it comes to losing a loved one.
Mark Geisler is the director of the Loss and Grief Support Group with the Lee Memorial
Health System. He describes grief as a tunnel and with the only way out is to feel your way through it. He says when it comes to grief “there are no shortcuts and
it takes time and it is horrible necessary work...”
While grieving your overwhelming emotions may make it seem impossible to adjust
to a new way of life…a life without those who were closest to you. But the Loss
and Grief Support Group helps its members realize they’re not alone.
Carmelo Ambrosio is a support group member, describes the experience: “They did
what I’m doing now. Try to help somebody else so when they come in, they cry. Everyone
cries at the beginning.”
Geisler agrees that it’s a personal experience. “There are no tricks and we each
grieve in our own way. And there’s no right way to do it and there’s no wrong way
to do it.”
Some support group members have even made the group a part of their life several
years after their loss. The group meets every Wednesday morning at 10:00 am at Southwest
Florida Regional Medical Center’s Patty Berg Cancer Center. They’re open to families
of the hospital as well as the community. Another support group is offered for those
suffering the loss of an adult child and they meet every other week.
