Stretch and Relaxation
August 28, 2008 |
While most group fitness instructors are focused on increasing your heart rate, Mary Day Power is looking to slow it down. She teaches a stretch and
relaxation class at Cape Coral Wellness Center.
“It’s choreographed and we do a warm up then we start doing stretches from head
to toe. We start from a standing position and then at some point we go down and
sit down and continue stretching.”
Mary Day created and launched the class. She says it’s been very popular. “It’s
a very well attended class, a lot of people have orthopedic problems come to the
class and they have been coming for years now. They do it for health reasons and
also to release the stress.” One major way Mary Day says you can release stretch
is by practicing relaxation techniques at least a few times a week. During each
of her classes she dedicates at least 20 minutes to progressive relaxation.
Pat Terwilliger is a student who enjoys taking the class each week with her
husband. “We joined her class and found it absolutely delightful. It’s a great
group of people, she keeps everybody motivated, she’s always upbeat.”
Relaxation methods have been proven to have many positive effects on the body
including lowering blood pressure and reducing muscle tension, headaches and
general aches and pains.
