Bariatric Support Groups
September 2, 2008

Dr. Moses Shieh has been performing bariatric surgeries for several years. Now he’s providing the service in Lee County. He says, “I have success stories after success stories.”

But Dr. Shieh is quick to point out that bariatric surgery does not guarantee successful and sustained weight loss. He requires his patients to participate in support and education programs before and after surgery. “We have them go to a support group meeting before the surgery so they know what to expect from patients that have already gone through it.”

Sharon Wilson was obese most of her life. But five years ago she had gastric bypass surgery. “I’ve suffered what they’re suffering.” Sharon adds that she knows first-hand how important it is to follow a program after surgery that includes behavioral support, licensed mental health counselors, licensed dietitians and weight loss support groups. She now works alongside Dr. Shieh as coordinator for Lee Memorial Health System’s bariatric surgery programs.

“We have behavior modification classes so they can actually have more one on one time to address those more serious or more difficult challenges that they might be having. We have patients come in that are doubtful. They wonder if they can really keep it off and we say yes you do your part we’ll do our part and we’ll help you keep it off.”

Dr. Shieh’s patients are also required to meet with him for follow up exams every four to six weeks after surgery. Most patients who are approved to undergo gastric bypass surgery have 80 pounds or more to lose.
