Sweeteners and Cancer
September 6, 2007

You’ve probably heard that experts are researching a possible link between artificial sweeteners and cancer.

Dietician Marjorie Chutkan says that not so long ago, it was a pretty common belief that artificial sweeteners increased your risk of getting cancer. But some studies are showing that may not be the case. “We found that over a period of time it didn’t do that to humans.”

Marjorie also says that artificial sweeteners are regulated by the FDA and are supposed to have undergone years of extensive testing. “Studies have been done from way back and they have not come up with any conclusive evidence that artificial sweeteners cause cancer.

Popular, everyday products like diet soda and light salad dressing contain artificial sweeteners physicians say using them in place of sugar can actually have some health benefits. “Like people who want to lose weight, it good for controlling the calories you take in. And for people with diabetes because it controls the amount of glucose in their system.

So its helpful rather than harmful.” Marjorie adds. So truth be told, studies have found that it’s safe to use artificial sweeteners – and today’s products sure taste better than the tab soft drinks of 25 year ago too.

Another benefit of using artificial sweeteners is that they help protect your teeth from cavities.
