Second Chance at Nursing
September 24, 2008 |
For Michelle Slater, becoming a nurse was a childhood dream. “I wanted to be a
nurse or in the medical profession when I was young. I care for people.” But as
she became an adult, marriage and taking care of her son became Michelle’s top
priorities. “I wrapped myself around him and made sure he went to baseball and
swimming lessons and all that so there was no time for me.”
But eventually times changed and Michelle was able to revisit her passion for
nursing. “My son went to college, I got divorced and there was lots of time for
me then so I went back to school and picked up where I should have been 30 years
ago. “ But she quickly experienced the stress of balancing the responsibilities
of her career and her role as a full time student, not to mention the financial
concerns of paying for nursing school. “It’s so much work and it’s so difficult,
but it’s really exhilarating doing it. The books are just outrageous. Even used
books are just amazingly expensive. Then there are all the little things like
uniforms and stethoscopes.”
There are more than two million nurses working in the United States but the
demand is increasing for nurses with higher certification levels. |
