PMS Diet Remedy

If you’re like many women PMS can control what you eat, what you drink and how you
feel. In today’s Health Matters we tell you about some simple ways to solve your
PMS problems.
Potato chips, chocolate, even beer can become must have foods when your PMS symptoms
kick
in. Marjorie Chutkan is a dietician with Lee Memorial Health System and she
regularly deals with patients who have food or drink cravings. “A lot of women tend
to have cravings around the PMS period and they will crave things like alcohol.
They will crave caffeine, sugars, and salts as well.”
Even though your cravings may be intense, giving into them can do more harm than
good. Excess salt and caffeine causes dehydration, making your symptoms even worse.
“When you’re going through PMS, you have all that bloating and discomfort, the water
retention and all that. When you eat salt it’s further absorbing more water so you’re
getting more bloating from that. So that doesn’t help you so you really do need to stay away from salt during PMS,” says Chutkan.
Bloating and mood swings are also common PMS symptoms. But unlike cravings, their best remedy could be found right in your refrigerator.
Chutkan says “One of the things we have learned is that increased calcium intake
can help with your mood. Calcium you can get mostly from dairy products, milk, yogurt,
and cheese. Those are beneficial during PMS.”
But if you’re PMS symptoms are severe you may want to talk with your physician about
possible prescription remedies.
